Simple Quick Fixes for Your Home

If you have a door that is dragging on the bottom, look at the gap all the way around the door and see if it is the same. If the gap is wider on the hinge side at the top of the door, take a 3" screw and insert it in the top hinge in the center hole on the doors frame side, not the door. You will have to remove the original screw first and you will need a power drill to screw in the 3" screw. This should pull the door up again and relieve the dragging. This also works sometimes if the door no longer latches properly.

2    If you are having trouble with the grout in your shower or tub, which is most likely at the bottom where the tile meets the shower or tub unit, remove the old grout and replace it with a good quality silicone caulk that matches. White works the best.

3    If you have locks on your home or car that seem hard to operate with a key, go to your local hardware store and purchase a small bottle of powered graphite lubricant. Squirt a small amount (a couple of puffs) into the key slot and then insert the key and work it around a few times. This should make the lock work easier. If it does not, it may be time to change the lock.

4    Now that Fall is rapidly approaching, you need to go outside and check all your trim on your house. Look and see if there are any cracks around the windows or doors. If there are now is the time to fill them with caulk and then some touch up paint. Do not wait until spring. The winter can wreak havoc on your home, so button all cracks now. A pound of prevention is worth well you know the rest.

5    A good coat of sealer on your deck will protect your investment if you have just built a new deck, or if you simply want to enhance and protect your existing deck. There are many different brands out there but the one I have had the best results with is called CWF. It is available a most local hardware centers.

6    Garage doors sometimes do not want to close as they should or at all. If the doors won't close, you might check the sensors on the tracks near the bottom of the garage doors track. They should both have a green light at least on most models. If the light is not on, or possibly you see a red light, align the sensors by pointing them at each other. When they are properly aligned the green lights will come on, and the doors should close. If you are still having trouble call a qualified contractor.

7    When it comes to caulking various projects in and around home start with a good quality caulk. Start by cutting a small hole at a 45% angle in the end of the spout. When I say small I mean no more than and 1/8 of an inch, or about the size of the lead in a number 2 pencil. Use constant pressure as you move the spout along the area in question. When you have laid a good bead of caulk, wet your finger with soapy water and smooth it off gently. If you have a large excess of caulk left after wiping, your spout opening is too large. Go slow and good luck.
